Much of the modern world would be radically different without the influence of Britain throughout history. If history were to be rewritten as Britain being anything but great, think of the impact that would have on modern life in the 21st century; English would probably not be the most common language, the industrial revolution would have been postponed for perhaps several centuries, and almost every aspect of history would have been different. How can a country be so successful that without it the world would be changed forever? This influence would not have been possible if Britain had not been so successful. Although many variables contributed to this success, none was more influential and important than the fact that Britain was able to use its island status to prosper in naval battles, exploration and invention. to adapt differently to life due to the constant presence of naval threats. They had to learn to use the surrounding waters to their advantage and prepare for imminent threats. The key to English victory over the Spanish Armada lay in the superior maneuverability of their ships. (Tincey, 11) The English navy was much more familiar with ocean patterns and how to work with different conditions. The unpredictable ocean weather acted as a shield against the Spanish Armada, destroying much of the fleet; of the 160 that launched the attack, only sixty-five of the ships that returned were able to be repaired .
