    DH Lawrence wrote "The Rocking Horse Winner" in 1920. At the beginning of the story, the narrator presents a boy named Paul. Paul tries to win his mother's love, seeking the luck she desires. By offering her the life she has always dreamed of, Paul hopes to win her love, repay her misery in the face of her father's misfortune, and bring some form of relief to the family. Paul decides to find luck after a discussion with his mother, during which the mother tells Paul that she is unlucky because of her marriage. Paul's mother says that luck brings money. Paul sees an opportunity to replace his father's misfortune and fulfill his mother's dreams. The gardener initiates horse racing, but goes to his uncle Oscar, because he is lucky. In “The Rocking Horse Winner,” money and greed appear throughout the passage, which shows the characters as selfless, ungrateful, and obsessed with money.
