Lorenz says the following of Plato's Republic: “Since the mid-19th century, the Republic has been Plato's most famous and widely read dialogue. As in most other Platonic dialogues, the main character is Socrates. How is it that one of the most widely read philosophical texts is not even considered in the modern era? This idea, however, is similar to the Bible, which is supposedly a bestseller and yet is not highly regarded as the truth it claims to be: the word of God. Is it just because people are ignorant? Or is it because people accept the ideas offered to them by the very professors who teach Plato? These questions remain unanswered and further study (as Socrates suggests) could only produce more questions.
