Essay / How Muslims Worship in a Mosque - 768
A mosque (Masjid in Arabic) is a place where Muslims worship God. The sacred space I visited was the “Dar AlHjrah” mosque in Falls Church, Virginia. In my country, every neighborhood has a mosque and each mosque has a different shape and design. Dar AlHjrah Mosque had everything a mosque has. There is a “minaret” which is a thin tower attached to the mosque. The shape of the “minaret” was octagonal with a pointed roof. The reason for the “minaret” tower is to make the call to prayer (Adhan). The color of the entire mosque from the exterior is white and beige. The mosque has a prayer hall (Musalla) which is the prayer area. Before entering the scare zone which is the prayer zone, everyone must remove their shoes and place them outside the shoe rack. The prayer hall had tall, long windows and a dome in the sealing which made the mosque very bright. In the mosque, no furniture is necessary. There are prayer mats, because during prayers of worship, bow and kneel before God. The reason for the carp, carpets and absence of shoes is to ensure the cleanliness of the mosque. In the prayer room there are shelves to place the holy book “Quran”. There is also the “Minbar”, a raised wooden platform for speeches. The “minbar” has a staircase covered with red carpet. Prayer rugs are used for praying. The “minaret” tower has a microphone to call to prayer (Adhan) at a height. The person who calls for prayer (adhan) is the person who leads the prayer (Imam). In front of microphones and loudspeakers, imams generally go up to the “minaret” and call for prayer. Muslims gather at the mosque when they hear the call to prayer (adhan). In Muslim countries, it is common to have mosques in every city. Muslims pray five times a day... middle of paper ...... the "Dhuhr" begins when the sun appears at its highest. The third prayer is the “Asr” prayer which begins before sunset, the “Almaghrb” prayer which begins after sunset. Finally the “Isha” which begins when night falls. Prayer time is a sacred time because it is the time when you face God and draw closer to God. Praying in Islam is what makes you a Muslim. Muslims try to pray five times a day, no matter where they are. Muslims know it is time to pray when they hear the call to prayer "adhan", but when there is no "adhan", they follow the prayer schedule. Nowadays, with technology, there are apps on iPhone, Android and Windows that people can download and there is an “adhan” that reminds them of the time to pray. The ritual ends when the person leading the prayer “imam” bids farewell and the people praying will then follow it with farewells...
