About ten years ago, on August 27, I began one of the most dreadful journeys of a child's life: middle school. At that point, I hated this new journey, especially because I had just migrated from Greensboro to Whitsett NC; removing all of my previous friends, forcing me to familiarize myself with a whole new school and decide who I should grant friendships to. Oh, I should also mention that the college I went to implemented SMOD. It is an abbreviated term used in Guilford County meaning standard fashion of dress to help alleviate peer pressure associated with fashion while preventing certain behavioral problems for the improvement of school climate, discipline and of success. Hear me out, the limitations that have apparently been placed on us have made us, at least me, more imaginative and creative in the way we wear our uniforms. I remember one morning before school I was trying to decide what to wear out of the “many” options given to me. At that point it ignited a spark, I saw two polo shirts and saw the opportunity to layer them (which is one of my favorite design/styling tools). I distinctly remember one of my layering combos was this blue police strobe light polo shirt on the outside with a crisp white polo shirt underneath. I was pulling the collar of the white polo shirt so that when you looked at me, you would see this two-tone polo shirt, with a white collar and a blue chest. I could have sworn I was the best dressed in this school with my layers of many different colors, although layering in the middle of summer might not be the best idea...you know, at Because of the heat and sweat, it's not the best look. .The release of graduationBut a few years later, I would say about four years, since the first day I started college. I finally earned my freedom from SMOD on graduation day. When those glorious freedom bells rang in my life, I had the opportunity to think for myself, to be creative in what I wore and how I presented myself. There was such beauty that day I was freed from this restricted, prison-like lifestyle. I don't know how I can express this enough to you...as Aretha Franklin would say: "Liberty (liberty), Liberty (liberty), Liberty, oh FREEDOM!! ". Being liberated strengthened my love and passion for fashion so much that my creativity exploded. Embracing Creativity and Individuality in High School I attended Weaver Academy, or should I say the Philip J. Weaver Academy Education Center of the Performing and Visual Arts for high school...I know the name is maybe- be a little longer and longer than that of several other schools, but the "extra" fits the school. Weaver was a school created for people with extra creativity and ambition and was extraordinarily diverse. This additional element seemed to promote trust throughout the school in several ways. Like how we represented ourselves, how they were bigger being in their, 1968.
