Maximus escapes death but his family is brutally massacred by Commodus's men. Maximus is then forced into slavery to become a gladiator where he begins his path of revenge to kill Commodus. In the film, Maximus describes multiple leadership skills for him and his man to better survive the gladiator games and win over the crowd. Maximus' three main leadership skills were building trust, setting an example for others, and building group cohesion and pride. When Maximus first enters the Gladiator games in his first match, he finds himself facing overwhelming odds and still manages to display courage and tactics. This showed the other men that he knew what he was doing and how to best defeat the enemy. In this, the other men began to follow Maximus and listen to his orders, which resulted in their first victory. Maximus' way of demonstrating building trust among his warriors was by always supporting them and trying to keep them safe. He did this during one of the gladiatorial battles by breaking through a fortified position to save his comrades. This built trust within his group, which led to greater cohesion and pride among the warriors. During the movie, you started to see this slowly develop as the movie goes on. You start to see Maximus and his warriors become less serious with each other and start making jokes and laughing and becoming a brotherhood. This helped them during their fights in the gladiator games because they knew they could count on each other and that they had something to fight for.
