The Lord of the FliesFor the study of the first amendment and censorship, we had to read a banned or contested book. I read Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Lord Of The Flies was written in the 1950s, during World War II. This book is about a group of boys aged 6 to 12 who find themselves stranded on an uninhabited island with no adults. They elect Ralph as leader and Jack and his school choir members as the group's hunters. The little children, or litluns as they are called in the book, believe there is a monster on the island, and as the book progresses, some of the older ones believe the monster is real after a few children confused a dead man with the monster. . Jack separates from the group because he disagrees with Ralph's obsession with keeping the traffic light lit at all times and would rather hunt than deal with it. The majority of the group accompanies him with the exception of Ralph, Piggy, Simon, Sam and Eric. After one of the new groups had been driven away, they cut off the head of a sow and placed it on a spear, and thrust it into the ground as an offering to the beast. Simon sees the dead man as he really is and when he sees the pig's head he talks to him and tells him that his theory that the beast is actually just the boy's fear of the unknown and he reveals himself to be Lord of the Flies. . When he tells the other boys what he discovered, they mistake him for the beast and kill him out of fear. Jack's tribe realizes that they cannot make a cooking fire without Piggy's glasses, so they ambush Ralph and the others in the night and steal Piggy's glasses. When Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric go to speak with Jack's tribe to get Piggy's glasses back, Ralph and Jack end up fighting, Sam and Eric are taken prisoner and Roger kills Piggy. Sam and Eric (now part of the Jack tribe) warn Ralph that the tribe plans to hunt Ralph and put his head on a spear like they did the sow. Roger tortures Sam and Eric until they tell him where Ralph is hiding, so Jack's tribe goes looking for Ralph and starts a fire in the forest to bring Ralph out of hiding, but the fire becomes out of control and the whole island catches fire..
