Essay / The influence of the media on adolescent girls - 1380
Every day, adolescent girls are influenced and affected by the media. Media includes everything from magazines, television shows, billboards, radio commercials, advertisements, newspapers and much more. Through the media, women are exposed to all forms of advertising, including images depicting misleading female figures. These ads do not feature women with wide hips, broad shoulders, long arms, or fuller figures. Instead, the women found on the front pages of magazines and advertisements are usually cut-out, photoshopped models with thigh gaps, perfect curves, high cheekbones and all the characteristics of a deceptively perfect-looking woman. The media neglects to show the average woman, who comes in all different shapes and sizes. The media also doesn't portray women who may have different body shapes due to their culture, the food they eat, and the way they were raised. Over time, the ideal body shape has changed significantly and the demand to be slimmer has increased significantly. Photos of the most naturally beautiful models have been distorted and altered using photoshop technologies in an attempt to achieve these unrealistic standards. It is hypothesized that the media negatively influences young women's perceptions of their body image and that unrealistic images presented in the media have a significant impact on women's body dissatisfaction (Ogden, Smith, Nolan, & Moroney , 2011). The next articles in this literature review will attempt to support and verify this hypothesis. Not only are magazine and television models photoshopped, but average mainstream women also use photo shopping websites and phone apps to retouch any unwanted... ... middle of paper ... ...young women consider a beautiful figure. This can lead teen girls to go to extreme measures and harm their own bodies to achieve the look presented in the media. All research found supports the hypothesis that the media has a negative impact on how women perceive their body image. Future research should focus on investigating ways in which media can positively influence adolescent girls' body image. This could be done by educating young women about self-esteem and body confidence, by educating young women on how not to be convinced by what the media says and finally by accepting all body shapes. . If women are educated and taught to be resilient to the media and its expectations, they may be able to avoid the risk of many of the negative effects that the media can cause (Snapp, Hensley-Choate & Ryu, 2012).
