A Critical Analysis of the Secret History of the Mongols This literary work is one of the few surviving historical literatures detailing the existence of the Mongols. The author is not known and even if it is dated back to the year 1240, the actual date of its writing and the original title of the literature remain controversial. However, whatever these uncertainties, one thing is certain; The Secret History of the Mongols is a literary work that has great significance in literature and history. It owes its importance to the fact that it serves as an account of the genealogy of the Mongol Khans as well as the times and life of Genghis Khan who founded the Mongol state. The story attempts to unveil the mysteries of the great legends that have existed in history. This story can be summarized by dividing the story into three main sections which represent a genealogy of Genghis Khan's ancestors, Genghis Khan's way of life, and the story of the son and Genghis Khan. This work restores the most eminent figures of ancient history to the positions they rightly deserve. It clarifies the picture of the nomadic lifestyle of the Mongols and is rich in information about the society of the Mongols in the 12th and 13th centuries” (Kahn, 2005). The first part gives an account of the historical legend of the Mongols. as obtained from pre-medieval oral traditions, legends, myths, historical events and stories. This part begins by telling the legend that a bluish wolf was the ancestor of the Mongols and that this wolf was born destined from the sky. Nevertheless, this epic was well known in China since it was used to teach the Chinese people to write and read the Mongolian language. Copies of this epic disappeared and by the advent of the 19th century, only a few copies of the epic could be traced. This epic is used by many historians to understand the Mongolian language and also to understand their culture, especially when it comes to assessing how the culture treated women in society.
