Forensic Science Technician: I would like to become a forensic science technician, simply because I find this sort of thing interesting. A forensic science technician does many things. Four things they do are run ballistics tests on guns to find the one used in a bank robbery; collect evidence at a crime scene to help understand the chain of events; matching DNA samples to reunite a long-lost child with his family; and solve a crime by matching fingerprints found at the crime scene with those of a suspect. One of the main reasons I would join this career is because I want to be able to solve a crime if someone needs help. The second main reason I would want to join this career is because I used to watch CSI all the time before I got too busy with school, but I still watch it when I can. I think I would like this job because I always found it interesting to watch CSI and understand how they solved the case. I also like to guess who did what and why did they do it. Forensic science positions require a bachelor's degree to work in this field. Understanding procedures and legal knowledge can be helpful. Candidates who have extensive hands-on experience with a variety of laboratory equipment, including computers and related equipment, do not need a lengthy period of on-the-job training. People interested in a career as a forensic science technician should take as many science and math courses as possible in high school. Science courses taken beyond high school, through a bachelor's or associate's degree program, should be laboratory-oriented, with an emphasis on laboratory skills. A solid background in physics, mathematics and applied chemistry is essential. About 30 colleges and universities offer a bachelor's degree in forensic science, and about a medium of paper or special agents gather facts and evidence of possible crimes. You need a high school diploma or equivalent and the annual salary is $56,980. Private detectives and investigators find facts and analyze information on legal, financial and personal matters. They offer many services, including background checks on people, locating missing persons, and investigating computer crimes.
