Essay / Responsible water use - 877
Many people around the world need water. Around 780 million people do not have access to drinking water (one billion people affected). People who have access to drinking water at home must pay a fee. People struggling to survive obviously don't have enough money to buy water. People who do not have access to clean water are at high risk of dying from disease or dehydration. At least 3.4 million people die each year due to water problems such as sanitation (one billion people affected). The United States of America is founded on the idea that all men and women are created equal with certain unalienable rights. These are the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Americans don't know what to prioritize: making profit for personal happiness or the inalienable right to life. Water is a necessity for life. Therefore, drinking water is a right that has been exploited and used as a commodity. What is more important: the right to life or the pursuit of happiness? In this specific situation, is it more important to make money from water or to save lives by making clean water accessible to everyone? Companies that focus their energy on making money by commodifying water are dooming the planet and the human race. With the depletion of the water source, a basic necessity of life will be removed. Those who are privileged, like Americans, should intervene in this situation. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA, the average American family of four uses about 400 gallons of water each day (US Indoor Water Use | WaterSense | US EPA). . So that would average out to about 100 gallons per person. All a person needs to survive is to drink at least two liters a day (How much water do you need to...... middle of paper ......ter/>."
