  • Essay / Literary Analysis of Maya Angelou's Graduation

    Inequal discrimination is a recurring problem in society. In her essay “Graduation,” Maya Angelou presents a form of discrimination based on the way African Americans were treated by whites; implying that the brief descriptions she extends in her essay about racism and discrimination in her society were based on her school experience. For example, they were not valued for their educational intelligence but only physically. For example, “like travelers with exotic destinations in mind, the graduates were remarkably forgettable…Once exams were handed in and grades were awarded, the student body, which acted like extended family, knew who had done well, who excelled and how pitifully these had failed” ( Maya Angelou 21). This quote reflects a social class preference. I believe Maya describes this as disappointment and discrimination between those who have money to travel and willing workers. I personally agree that racism affects society and everyone is equal and this quote signifies the injustice they face in society. Like the American race, having preferences for one's race is not fair to others. As this quote says, some professors gave changes to those who were high class by accepting their tardiness and late work simply because of their race. This represents a crucial unjust act. In the same way that the central school (white school) was created for "improvement", a "known artist" was going to teach them art and other supplies that would make them better because they have everything to be known. a large improvement school as for the Stamp School; Donleavy recognizes that it is possible for African Americans to learn successfully, but they only reside in sports or service (Angelou 27).
