There is a popular cartoon on the Internet that shows three men standing near the fence of a baseball game, all hoping to watch the game. Each man is on a box of the same size, since they all have the same resource, they are in fact equal but the problem however is that only one man can watch the match. The men vary in size, one is tall, one is of medium height and the last is very small. Only the tall man is able to see over the fence and watch the game. The caption says equality. The split-screen cartoon features the same three men, but this time the tall man doesn't have a crate to stand on, the medium-sized man has one, and the short one has two. This time they can all comfortably watch the game. The caption on this side says justice. Many people argue that justice can only be served through an equal distribution of resources, but this cartoon may have proven otherwise because even though the resources distributed among the three men were not equal, justice was still served. because every man could watch the game. Although this is just a fictional example from a cartoon, it teaches an important lesson to remember as every society in the world seeks to establish justice. Fair distribution of resources is only one component of justice and does not in itself establish justice and it is important not to confuse them. It is wrong to assume that equal provision of resources among people equates to justice being served, because this assumption oversimplifies the definition of justice and overlooks many of the barriers and obstacles that cannot be overcome through the simple provision of resources. ignores middle of paper......pability. This assumes that providing the same resources to all members of a society will give the same resources to all members, but we all know that is not true. If we return to the example of the three men standing on a crate to watch a baseball game, only one was able to use the resource to get the most out of it while the other two suffered. Justice was established when two crates were provided for the shortest man, one for the medium sized man and the tall man did not need a crate but they were all able to enjoy comfortably Many critics oppose this approach to justice, claiming that it is too individualistic and does not do enough to rectify the problems that exist. Despite these objections, it is clear that the establishment of justice cannot be truly achieved through the simple provision of resources..
