This discussion paper aims to provide guidelines for police investigators to establish a better interrogation system to avoid false confessions. However, and to be honest, it is difficult to change a system that is based on ancient doctrines and practices, also known by the popular saying "that's the way it's always been done." But, as its opposite says, "just because something has always been done that way doesn't mean it should continue to be done that way", and a clear example of this problem is the use of methods for interrogation purposes. The Reid technique is still used to train police on how interrogations are conducted and should be a matter of concern. As the Social Psychology of False Confessions journal article mentions, the processes that involve the Reid Technique are based on a book -Criminal. Interrogations and confessions- which was written in 1962 (Kassin, 2015). Although it is currently in its fifth edition, we cannot be sure that the methods used by investigators in 1962 are still effective in 2016. Furthermore, we cannot rely on this process of interrogation to determine whether a person is innocent or guilty, as it is possible that these old procedures could induce people to plead guilty and therefore provide false confessions. To some extent, it is unbelievable that given the literature and documents available on this subject, it is possible to conduct interrogations to determine whether a person is innocent or guilty. There has been no progress in trying to change the way investigators question people. Beginning in 1962, new areas of study in criminal law were created and developed. Therefore, a group of specialists, such as investigators, psychologists, lawyers, judges and others, should create a manual on less ba...... middle of paper ..... .ed fairly, regardless of one's race, ethnicity or gender. As already mentioned, the purpose of this article is to provide investigators with guidelines to reduce false confessions. Although different approaches have been considered as to why people decide to make false confessions, these are just some of the many reasons that could influence a person's decision to plead guilty. I only mentioned those related to interrogation methods and prejudices. However, there are others that are also important because they deal with corruption, economic compensation and social pressure. There are undoubtedly many publications that can provide more information on this controversial issue. Furthermore, an interesting research topic would be to investigate whether, besides social factors, there are biological elements that could lead people to make false confessions...
