Essay / Realize that our planet has limited resources - 1741
In a finite world, what does prosperity look like? Does this require ecological destruction and social injustice or is it simply the repercussions caused by our fundamentally broken society? We must flourish as human beings within the limits of our planet and to do so we must first achieve a credible vision of prosperity. To realize such a vision, we must first recognize our limitations as a planet in understanding the environmental impacts of economic activity. At the rate the human race is functioning, we are entering an era of the end of cheap oil prices, of increasing human population, of degradation of air, water and soil, of conflicts over use of land resources, fishing and forestry rights, constant increase in the prices of raw materials. prices and the problem of stabilizing our global climate. But to what extent is economic growth an adequate measure of development? It is certain that today, regularly eroding the foundations of our well-being for tomorrow is not development. Our inability as a society to live within our limits has led to rapid human population growth, excessive resource consumption, depletion and pollution on a local, regional and global scale. As population growth increases, so do the needs for food, shelter, water, clothing and other services. To meet these demands, we depend on Earth's already depleting natural resources. Thus, rapid population growth leads to increased pollution and a decline in living standards. A study by a research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s found that the human population would exceed Earth's capacity to provide resources and assimilate our waste within a century if exponential growth continued. This study highlighted the injustice... middle of paper ...... to solve world hunger, population control, pollution, resource depletion or rising material prices raw, it is a difficult task and it is a task that every individual on the planet must take responsibility for. We live in a world where consumer demands are increasing and technology is improving. Not everyone is going to downsize their lavish lifestyle and ditch their smartphones and luxury cars in order to improve the environment. In reality, what we need to do is continue to cultivate, exploit, improve technology, etc., but do so responsibly, with regard to the environment and the capabilities of the Earth. This will not be an easy task but many projects have been put in place to help improve the sustainability of our planet and this is a start. As Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed.".”
