  • Essay / The Wizard of Oz Movie Review

The movie I chose to talk about is called “The Wizard of Oz”. Going through each genre and carefully selecting which genre this film belongs to, I chose the fantasy genre. A scene in the film that particularly strikes me is the one where the character of Dorothy meets the scarecrow played by Ray Bolger. The song this character sings is called "If Only I Had a Brain". Knowing the popularity of the film, this scene is well known to people who watched it. Another scene that stands out is why the film begins in black and white, while Dorothy is still stuck in Kansas. As she heads towards fairytale land, colorful lighting begins to appear. The color changing effect really gives an overwhelming feeling to the viewer. When Dorothy encounters the Wicked Witch of the West and the Witch of the North, she sets off on a journey to find the Wizard in hopes of putting things back the way they were. I think these types of films often take similar paths plot-wise, and as such, The Wizard of Oz lived up to the expectations of its genre. The Wizard of Oz has many scenes in which Dorothy faces many obstacles. Through these events, she meets three special characters: the Scarecrow, the Tinsmith and the Lion. The brains, heart and courage that must be done to bring her home. She also meets little people called Munchkins. This film is at first glance pure escapism, where the characters can live in an imaginary setting or experience situations that break the limits of the real world. » (Jacobs, 2014).
