Essay / Preparing Minds for Markets, by Jonathan Kozol
When you tell someone that they have to make up their mind, it restricts their creative mind from other ideas. For example, when I was shopping for my first car, I was told to think about my desires in advance to make the process easier. When I decided I was definitely set on a black car, I found something wrong with every other car I had tested. It's like attending college at the beginning. To go to university, it is suggested to choose a specialization. This is a difficult decision if a student is unsure of the career path they are interested in. Although "Undeclared" is an option, it is much more common to choose a specialization than to simply decide to change it later. I feel like it's important to keep options open, and that young kids should be able to keep their career options open.
