Essay / Attending a Caucus - 701
For my Advanced Topics assignment this week, I attended the DFL caucus at Middle School on the evening of Super Tuesday. As countless others have said, the evening was one of the “DFL Caucus Madness.” I arrived at a quarter to 7 and barely found a parking space at the far end of the bus lot. Luckily, I found a group of high school friends when I arrived and we basically stayed together for the rest of the night. Jordan, Claire, Megan and I all live on the east side of town, which means we all belong to Northfield Township. Going into the night, neither of us knew this important information, as neither of us had ever huddled before. Once we figured out which room to go to, we locked ourselves in one of the many classrooms used for the event. Jammed is certainly the right word, and soon people were spilling out into the hallway. So, after quite a bit of procrastination, the voters of Northfield Township went to the common area where we all registered and voted on pieces of scrap paper. We tried to stay and get involved in electing precinct chairs and delegates, but there was just too much noise and we were very confused about what we were supposed to do. There was a rumor about a larger debate at 8 p.m. in the auditorium, so we left our township caucus and started to figure out what was going on. Eventually, we learned that the huge crowd had caused the debate to be canceled. So we headed home after a busy, confusing but rewarding evening at the DFL caucus..
