  • Essay / Music therapy and child abuse - 2024

Literature reviewThe aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between survivors of child abuse during music therapy sessions on reported self-esteem and place of perceived control. Sawyer and Judd (2012) define child maltreatment as “a tragedy that harms children psychologically, emotionally, and physically while disrupting their healthy development.” Survivors of childhood trauma must live in fear of the accused abuser, attend numerous court proceedings, and manage complications associated with changes in family dynamics. Although it is commonly associated with maltreatment, because child neglect is legally separated, it will not be included in this study when referring to typical maltreatment (Sawyer and Judd, 2012). As cited in an article by Sawyer and Judd, nearly 3.3 million cases of suspected child abuse were reported in the United States of America (2012); This has profound implications in the field of music therapy due to the large number of potential clients. There are several areas to consider when treating a survivor of child abuse: the need for safety and trust, the sense of belonging, protection from perceptions or actual threats, the fact that the accused facing the court, revictimization prevention, and empowerment (Sawyer & Judd, 2012). Davis, 2005, states that "children terrorized by sexual abuse, neglect, physical abuse, or war atrocities may suffer lasting injuries, nightmares, depression, and troubled adolescence involving substance abuse, bingeing food or aggression. Children who are victims of abuse must regain a sense of control over their lives. Experiencing healthy relationships, being nurtured by adults, and helping them learn resilience are all well-researched interventions (Sawyer & Judd, 2...... middle of article...... and Development, 80(1), 77-85.Myers, DG (2005).Exploring psychology: sixth edition in modules (6th ed.: Worth.Rickson, DJ and Wills, WG (2003). aggressive behaviors in adolescents: a pilot study. .
