  • Essay / America's Selective Aid to Other Countries: Factors and...

It is surprising that a country like the United States of America, which is so in tune with the world, does not respond more quickly to the atrocities committed. in Bosnia. The United States is unlike any other country in the world: when there is a problem, such as a natural disaster in another part of the world, it is more than willing to provide rapid assistance. For example, we were the first to respond to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and our efforts to help them rebuild lasted what seemed like a lifetime. Furthermore, at that time our country was beginning to sink into an economic crisis but we were still able to send millions of dollars abroad? Helping a country rebuild is harmless, but if they had recognized the events in Bosnia and chosen to intervene, it could have started a war. It was almost as if they were waiting for the problem to resolve itself. Sometimes our country selfishly chooses the types of problems it wants to help with, and more often than not, it chooses what is safe. The United States of America is considered one of the most powerful countries in the world, and I recognize that we have the ability to intervene and prevent these malicious acts from occurring. When atrocities occur in other parts of the world, they often go unnoticed for a while, but once discovered, they usually come to an end. It is the responsibility of our country and other countries around the world to come together to protect not only our own citizens, but also those who live in other countries. It is remarkable that we can take a stand against any form of violence and try to stop it, even when we are faced with major atrocities in our own country. I believe it is the right thing to do to protect... middle of paper ... every human being, regardless of the extent of the brutality. If human beings do not have the capacity to protect themselves; I think it would be very irresponsible to look the other way. We are all equal on this earth, no person is more important than another. All innocent victims deserve the protection we can offer them. Our country needs more people like Peter Maass saying, “Go out and do something!” » Why does our country deem it necessary to prioritize the severity of atrocities? These problems won't go away anytime soon; the sooner we recognize them, the sooner we can work to create a better world. Works Cited Maass, Peter. “The wild beast”. 1996.
