Essay / Importance of Xenia in the Odyssey - 1032
Since Poseidon, god of earthquakes, is still furious with Odysseus for stabbing Polyphemus in the eye, the Xenia of the Phaeacians has gone bad. They welcomed their guest properly, but went against the will of the gods and in a way showed no respect to the gods, especially Poseidon. After Poseidon knew that Odysseus had returned to Ithaca, he said: “I will now lose all my honor among the immortals, now there are mortals who show me no respect – the Phaeacians too. » (13. 145-147) Thus, the Phaeacians were punished and killed for showing Xenia in the wrong place.
