  • Essay / Biography of George Washington - 1832

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732. He was elected the first president by the Electoral College unanimously in 1789. Washington is commonly called the "Father of his Country" because he played a major role played an important role in the fight for independence and helped form the government we have today. Many of his leadership practices became the model for how politics played out after his term. For example, the use of a group of advisors called a “firm” is still relevant today. He served only two terms and then resigned, which became, for the most part, the accepted norm for future presidents. George Washington is associated with certain folk tales, such as being widely known for admitting to his father that he had cut down a cherry tree, proclaiming that he could not lie. He is credited with skipping a coin all the way down the Potomac River. Although the stories of cherry trees and coin flips are probably not true, President George Washington accomplished many great things that are amazing and true parts of our history. George Washington was a colonist, and like many colonists, he disapproved of the Stamp Act imposed on him. the colonies by British law. Additionally, like many of his fellow colonists, his opposition to the Stamp Act was not enough to go to war against the British Empire. It was not until the Townshend Act was declared and implemented that he began to play a leading role in opposing the British forces. Washington viewed the passage of what they called the Intolerable Acts in 1774 as "an invasion of our rights and privileges."
