Essay / The connection between time, memory and history in the story “Let's Go to Golgotha”
The following essay will be based on the short story “Let's Go to Golgotha” by Gary Kilworth (1979) . The story is about a family from the future who travels back in time to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Before leaving on the trip, the family would first study the Bible to understand the story of Jesus and know what to do and what not to do. Then they went to the past, moving from the future to the past (different time zone). After seeing the past, they understand how Jesus was crucified and keep it in their memory. I will connect the concepts of time, memory and history in the story. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why Violent Video Games Should Not Be Banned”? History can also be a series of past events related to a particular country, period, or people. In the story "Let's go to Golgotha", events from the past of different countries are mentioned. First, they evoke Rome, the eruption of Pompeii. The eruption of Vesuvius destroyed and buried the entire city of Pompeii. The eruption killed two thousand people. The eruption took place in 79 AD. The second event mentioned is the military education of Sparta. Sparta was a warrior community, their culture was based on trust and military service. Young boys were trained to become soldiers. They trained in very dangerous conditions, for example they were not allowed to wear shoes. The third event was the Crusades. The Crusades were wars between different religions. In the story, the family from the future takes a trip back in time to Golgotha to witness the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which itself is a historical event. Crucifixion was one of the most painful forms of punishment inflicted on victims of crimes or traitors. Their feet and hands were nailed to a cross. In the Holy Bible (which is a historical text of Christian scripture), Jesus Christ was crucified. The Jews were asked to choose between Jesus and Barabbas (who was a criminal), and they chose to save Barabbas. Jesus was crucified in the city of Golgotha. The past cannot be changed or disrupted. Time travelers were asked to dress like the natives so as not to appear different. “Simon glanced at Mandy. Her new brown eyes flashed back at her and she was beautiful in a gypsy way,” this shows that even some of their bodily features were altered so that they could fit in. “I’m glad you came.” Whispered Mandy in Hebrew,” this also shows that they were also taught to speak Hebrew so that they could communicate with the natives. When the crowd shouted that Barabbas must be saved (and Jesus crucified), they must also shout the same thing, as difficult as it was since they were Christians, they could not change the past. Even when they nailed the sign “Jesus Christ of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” they also had to laugh with the crowd. The present is influenced by the past, but also by the future. For example, we would not have Passover or celebrate the resurrection of Christ if he was not crucified. Even the events that occurred in Rome and Sparta constitute an important history of these places celebrated each year. Changing or disrupting the past would mean changing the present and, therefore, changing the future. Time is the continuous advancement of existence and events of the past, present and future, considered in theirtogether. Time can also be a plan, schedule, or arrangement for when something should happen or be done. Time can be measured in minutes, days, years, etc. There is a time that can be felt and a time that can be measured by science. In the story, the family and other time travelers make arrangements to travel back in time. The future is different from the past. The world is evolving. Evolution is how living organisms change and develop over time. Evolution is mainly caused by climate change. Climate change is the change in global or regional climate patterns. Living organisms must evolve to adapt to climate change. Going back to the past will therefore be difficult because the body is not used to these climatic conditions. In the story, Mary and Simon complain about the heat. They must come from a future with cooler climatic conditions. They seek shade because their bodies are not adapted to the heat of the past. Climate change is caused by human activities. Today, machines do almost everything for us. These machines use gas which produces carbon dioxide. Increasing carbon dioxide levels are the main cause of climate change. In the story, there is a treatment room in which there are machines used to prepare time travelers for travel. In the story, they also complain about walking on uneven ground and sharp stories. In the past, there were very few houses. The place was full of mountainous terrain. Due to the very hot and dry climatic conditions, there were more rocks than soil. In the future there will be almost no mountains. The land is filled with concrete, houses and roads. The text shows that times have really changed, the past is so different from the present, and so is the future. In the text, Mandy complains that the children have nothing to do. In the past, children were responsible for planting and harvesting vegetables and caring for livestock. Nowadays, children have nothing to do since we buy food from stores rather than growing it ourselves. Memory is the ability to remember something that happened in the past. Memory is divided into two main forms. Long-term memory and short-term memory. Short-term memory is non-permanent information that is stored in the brain, it can only be stored for a short period of time. Long-term memory is permanent information stored in the brain, it can last a lifetime. “A few days before the trip, you will all be invited to visit our language laboratory, where you will learn Hebrew according to the principle of knowledge injection for an afternoon. As you probably know, this knowledge will last for a month before completely disappearing from your brain,” this statement shows that the language was stored in their short-term memory. In the text, they remember that the Jewish people crucified Jesus Christ. As they seek shade, they realize that all the natives are at home. It was they, the time travelers, who crucified Jesus Christ. Simon said: "I wish we had never come, he looked at me you know, I will never forget his eyes as long as I live." This shows that memories can be good and bad. Even if we want to forget the bad ones, we can't, they are there. In the passage, the historical events mentioned by Mandy in the story are now just a memory. Although these are terrible memories, we cannot erase what happened in the past. In the passage, Simon.
