Essay / Dangerous Foods in the Book, Salt, Sugar, Fat: How...
The book Salt, Sugar, and Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us discusses the danger of food with its readers. The dangers of food discussed in the book are the ingredients of salt, sugar and fat found in the foods that individuals consume daily. Producers use these ingredients to their advantage to achieve consumer happiness. The happiness point reached is used by food giants to make profits. However, due to research into the health risks of these ingredients, food companies are strategizing in order to maintain profits and earn more. In chapter nine, the author informs readers about the Oscar Mayer Company. Oscar Mayer is known for his bologna dishes and popular Lunchables. Bologna is a product high in salt and saturated fat. Bologna was losing its appeal due to the health risks associated with it. Health risks associated with Bologna are heart attacks and strokes. The Oscar Mayer Company created a low-fat bologna food and marketed the bologna product, but the perceived profits were diminishing. The Oscar Mayer team decided to offer a product known today as Lunchables. Lunchables have become a popular product because of their convenience. The convenience of Lunchables was due to the fact that it was a refrigerated prepared food. The original Lunchables contained red meat, cheese, crackers, a napkin and juice. Since Lunchables have attracted a lot of attention, the producers of Lunchables decided to add different types of Lunchables. Lunches ranged from pizza, burgers, hot dogs and more. New types of Lunchables also included sugary drinks and desserts such as cookies and/or candies. Researchers studied Lunchables and deemed them a disaster. They said Lunchables was in the middle of a paper... made me aware of the health risks associated with the foods I eat. There are many health risks associated with the foods on supermarket shelves. A food item I ate as a child was Lunchables. At the time, I just thought the food was good. However, now that I am aware of what I am putting into my body, I try to look at the ingredient and food products I am consuming before I consume them. The book also informed me about deceiving people in order to make profit. A great example from chapter eleven is the Kraft Company. The Kraft Company says it wants to reduce the amounts of salt, sugar and fat in its products. On the other hand, Kraft is creating new products with increased amounts of these ingredients. Many companies say they are trying to meet consumer desires. This idea is false. Consumers are studying what our bodies need and using it against us..
