However, she could very well have been talking about the newly freed slaves, depending on the title. One thing to note about this short story is that it transcends time, in the sense that it can relate to all generations. Another example in which Chopin writes about values in the world is in two opposing early short stories she wrote about marriage. The first is “Wiser Than God” which is about a young pianist who rejects the marriage of a man who says he would let her continue her musical work so that she can pursue her own career as a pianist in complete freedom. The next one is “A point in dispute!” ” which is about an already married couple who want to pursue their own goals separately while remaining together. She goes to Paris while he stays in America, which doesn't work and they end up unhappy. Some would view these two opposing stories as a message about marriage that it is bad or that we should all be warned about getting married. But that's not what Chopin said.
