In the story "Desiree's Baby," author Kate Chopin explains how love could be complicated for interracial couples in the 19th century, just as it is today. In "Desiree's Baby", Desiree and Armand appear to be in love with each other, but before they were lovers, they were best friends. Armand never thought he would fall in love with Désirée because of the length of their friendly relationship. It was only one day that Désirée appeared there and suddenly Armand had this feeling. For example, Armand's mother did not approve of the marriage because Désirée did not know what race she was. Armand at this time did not care about Désirée's race.
