  • Essay / Negative Effects of Media Violence on Children

    Americans feel growing unease about the growing problem of violence among young people between the ages of twelve and eighteen. It is a controversial subject that is causing increasing concern among families and the government. Some believe this national problem is because families are no longer a united unit and are no longer the ideal place to take responsibility for caring for their children. There are others who believe it is the influence of media and technology. The question this article will examine is whether youth violence is due to unattached parenting or the lack of media censorship and influence. Through the presentation of documented materials, it will be demonstrated that the increasing rate of violence among young people is the result of the lack of media censorship. According to psychologist Craig Anderson, research shows that violent video games, movies, television, and music in the media increase the likelihood of violent and aggressive behavior in immediate and long-term situations among young people (81). At the start of this decade, it was estimated that 46 percent of all households with children had access to at least one television, game console, personal computer, or both (“Violence and the Media” 267). However, this percentage has changed and is growing every day with the advancement of technology and because it is easily accessible. The Federal Trade Commission reports that companies' media and marketing plans advertise their products by targeting media outlets most likely to reach children under 17.
