Essay / Yin or Yang, East or West - 761
Based on “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua, my mother raised me Western, while my father wanted to raise me Western. the oriental. Having been raised this way, I witness both sides of parenting styles and have come to believe that an Eastern oriented method of parenting is more beneficial to a child's future. First and foremost, I enjoyed my freedom from a young age (compared to parents my age), but now I have to work harder than necessary. Thanks to my mother, I received freedom at a very young age. I was raised by my mother in a Western sense and I would say that since the second year I have been somewhat of a free child; plus, I was allowed to go out all the time and attend events, but all at the expense of time that could have been put to good use. “Western parents worry a lot about their children's self-esteem” (Chua 413). My mother coddled me by letting me do things unlike other Asian kids, and my grades were mediocre compared to my cousins who were "A" students. Unlike my mother, my father wanted me to work diligently growing up and enjoy my freedom later. To truly experience freedom, you have to work for it, and I've only just realized that. According to Chua, “Chinese parents believe they know what is best for their children” (413). My father knew that if I studied vigorously as a child; as a result, I would develop valuable habits and enjoy adult life. However, while having fun, I had developed harmful habits such as prioritizing the wrong things, laziness, procrastination, etc. ; for these reasons, I now regret not having graciously accepted my father's state of mind. Then, oriental parenting is the best option for a child's future. The way oriental parents push their children is middle of paper......, I'm glad I was born; Plus, I believe others feel the same way. In conclusion, nourished by both Eastern and Western approaches, I recognize the ups and downs of each parenting style, and have come to believe that an Eastern parenting style is more beneficial for a child's future. Looking back, I honestly feel that I would be in a better position than I am today if I was raised in an Eastern way. Growing up in a predominantly Western family, I realized how much I was lacking compared to other people raised in an Eastern-oriented household. By raising a child according to an oriental method, the child's freedom is more fulfilling and the parents are treated with due respect.
