Historical OverviewLisbon was founded 3000 years ago by the ancient Phoenicians (Arabs, Middle Eastern decent) and was loved for its warm, tropical weather and beaches. (McDonald 132) Lisbon experienced many battles and power grabs, including its capture by the North African Moors and Christian Spaniards in 1147, who proved to be Lisbon's permanent guests. Lisbon then suffered one of Europe's worst earthquakes in 1755, which killed a third of Lisbon's population and displaced more. Due to the presence of many settlers in Lisbon, the ethnicities of Lisbon are mixed, but mainly Spanish and Portuguese. After joining the European Union in 1970, Portugal and Lisbon became much more economically stable. One cultural difference is language; in Canada, English and French are spoken; In Portugal, we speak Portuguese. The main difference between the two is that Toronto is colder and less tropical than Lisbon, so Lisbon is a favorable vacation spot, while Toronto is not as much of a vacation spot. (Though it's still a decent vacation spot, in other respects.) Overall, both places are great towns with pros and cons, and it's great to have been to both two ! Works CitedMcDonald, Ferdie.
