  • Essay / The study of language and the importance of the study...

Sound has two branches of study: phonetics, which studies the sounds of human speech from different angles, and phonology, the principles that govern the sound system of particular languages. The structure category also includes two branches: morphology – the study of word formation and syntax – the study of sentence structure. Finally, within the category of meaning, there are two branches: semantics – the study of words and pragmatics – the study of language use and its effects in the specific context in which they are spoken (Handke, 2012). Linguistics is a fascinating field of study and allows us to better understand the history of language, the current state of our language, the evolution of language, and how we shape and express our language.
