Essay / Beowulf Epic Essay - The Message of Beowulf Epic...
The Message of Beowulf Shild Shaving and Beowulf were both highly honored during their lives. Both were brave warriors, victorious in many battles. Shild conquered many people and many lands. For example, How Shild made soldiers of all countries slaves, crowds of captives were beaten and terrorized. He also became king of the Danes. He was very honored and became very rich during his life. Just as Beowulf had become one of the most famous men in his lifetime due to his defeat of Grendel and Grendel's mother. Later he also became king of Geatland. He ruled for fifty years, but his time came during a battle against an angry dragon. Beowulf was still very strong in his older years. Just like Shild Shaving: when his time came, the old king died, still strong but called into the hands of the lord. These two deaths were honored with very large funerals. Shild Shaving set sail on a warship full of treasure. Beowulf's body was burned along with enormous amounts of treasure. His funeral pyre remained lit for 10 days. Shild Shaving and Beowulf were incredibly loved and respected by their people. Both were very powerful warriors and capable of enormous feats. They conquered the land and the people, and they both died with pride. The story of Beowulf centers around the main character, Beowulf. He is a man with impressive and superhuman powers. He is able to fight huge beasts without the aid of weapons. In the story, he sails to Denmark to a meadhall named Herot. The story is interesting in that many things are named, including swords and armor which are particularly honored if they aided their previous owners in battle. Beowulf's sword was called Hrunting. Herot had been plagued by a monster named Grendel for twelve years. In one night, Beowuld conquers Grendel and the 12 years of Suffering are over. Unbeknownst to Beowulf, Grendel has a mother who then seeks revenge for Grendel's death. Beowulf then leads an incredible underwater battle against her and is victorious. He then sold his products to his native Geatland, then became king. After about fifty years, a dragon begins to wreak havoc on Geatland. Beowulf blames himself for the dragon and leaves to fight it. He dies, but in doing so he kills the dragon. Beowulf was written around 800 BC. This makes it very interesting because it gives you an idea of what life may have been like. In the story, life is centered around the meadhalls which are large drinking holes. Here one can sleep at night, have a meal and also drink a sweet alcoholic drink called meade. The meadhall was the center of the village. If you were a foreigner, you might try to spend the night there. If you were a warrior, you would sleep there. In Beowulf, the king of Denmark lived in a meadhall named Herot. Another important aspect of life was honor. Honor depended on who your father was. If he had no honor, neither should you. Bloodline was extremely important. For example, when Beowulf and his warriors landed in Denmark, they were approached by a Danish warrior who questioned them about their presence in Denmark. Beowulf told him that he was there to fight Grendel, but he also said, "We are Geats, men who follow Higlac." My father was a famous soldier, widely known as a leader among men. His name was Edgetho. An interesting aspect of Beowulf's battle with Grendel was that when he fought Grendel, he did not use any weapons. He only used his bare hands. In the story he caught Grendel.
