  • Essay / War and nuclear weapons - 794

War. War never changes. Since the dawn of time, man has killed for the good of his territory and his beliefs. Weapons have evolved alongside human intelligence, giving people more ways to kill each other with faster methods. When a neutron is separated from a proton in the nucleus of an atom, it causes an atomic explosion. Over time, these explosions became larger and stronger to the point that they could lead to the end of the world. Nuclear weapons date back to World War II, when the world was on the brink of one of the greatest wars in history. In 1942, German physicists learned how to split an atom, which spread fear throughout the world. While Germany was trying to create an atomic bomb, Einstein and Fermi came up with a plan to defeat the Axis forces. Fermi informed U.S. government officials of the situation, but very few people saw it as a problem. Einstein then attempted to raise awareness by sending a letter to President Roosevelt asking him to launch an atomic research program. Roosevelt found this unnecessary, but gradually, over time, he agreed to Einstein's request. So the Manhattan Project got off to a slow but sure start. The Manhattan Project was only carried out at a few universities and was kept secret from the public. Progress was slow, but in December 1942, Fermi's team created the first controlled nuclear chain reaction. A nuclear reaction occurs when the nucleus of an atom constantly produces neutrons (ushistory.org). After this discovery, the Manhattan Project received more funding, more facilities, and research accelerated. In the end, $2 billion was spent on research and around 120,000 people were employed, but very few knew the purpose of the project (ushistory.org). Finally, on July 16, 1945, the Tr...... middle of paper ......ng project was underway on the issue. Humanity has reached a point where it is now using weapons that it is not capable of controlling. History has proven their potential ability to cause mass murder. Today, countries bicker about their weapons like children and their toys. It is obvious that nuclear weapons must be banned, otherwise the outcome will be beyond our control.Works CitedEnergy-net.org. The energy network. NDWeb.
