  • Essay / Raising the age at which you can get your driving license

Should the age for getting a driving license be raised and, if not, should graduated licensing be instituted? This is a growing issue in America as well as other countries around the world. The percentage of accidents involving automobiles among adolescents is constantly increasing. Whether caused by lack of experience or under the influence of alcohol, deaths have become all too common among teenage motorists. This problem is not going to go away on its own; action must be taken. The state needs to raise the age requirement for obtaining a license or an institute-graded license because teenagers are not mature enough to handle the dangerous responsibilities of driving. We allow teenagers to obtain their license earlier than in most countries, and usually with little driving experience. is required before licenses are issued. That's not very smart of us considering that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 16-year-olds have the highest percentage of crashes involving speeding, the highest percentage of crashes involving a single vehicle, the highest percentage of driver error accidents, and the highest vehicle occupancy rate (NHTSA). Compared to older drivers, teens as a group are more willing to take risks and less likely to use seat belts. Many experts blame the immaturity, impulsivity and lack of training and experience of young adolescents as factors contributing to the high rate of accidents involving teenagers. Teenagers don't need to be victims of their inexperience behind the wheel. Between 1975 and 1996, the death rate among 16-year-old drivers followed an upward trend. The rate increased from 19 per 100,000 in 1975 to 35 per 100,000 in 1996, and this increase occurred among both men and women. The driver's number of 16 years old...... middle of paper ...... the teenager reaches 18 years old, a full license can be obtained if the driver has completed at least 12 months with an intermediate license and n 'Had no accidents or violations (vehicle choice). Driving is a privilege and should be treated as such. Too many people view driving as a constitutionally protected right; Driving is too serious an activity to be left to teenagers who don't know what they're doing, no matter how much training they receive. Raising the age requirement for obtaining a driver's license or instituting graduated licensing is a necessity if the United States wants to save the lives of adolescents. It would also reduce the number of accidents involving teenagers that occur every day. Driving is a huge responsibility for people of all ages and the choices teen drivers make could make adolescence the best or worst time..
