  • Essay / Lowering the Age for Buying and Drinking Alcohol

Today's teens are doing things they know could get them in big trouble, like going to parties, smoking, and drinking. So why would people today want to have this problem? Well, it started when the drinking age was raised to 21. Teenagers thought that since the age had been raised to such a high level, they could get married, sign contracts, join the army. That they could also drink, teenagers started going to parties and then came home drunk so the law wouldn't know they had been drinking (against the age of 10). People thought that if we raised the drinking age, alcohol consumption would decrease and there would be fewer accidents. Well, it didn't go as planned, it helped in some states. For others, the law hasn't really helped. Some states have made a proposal to lower the drinking age, all are similar, but one state that is different in particular when it comes to lowering the age is Missouri. As GK Chesterton said: “The free man is the owner of himself. He can harm himself by eating or drinking; he can ruin himself while playing. If he does, he is certainly a fool and he may be damned; but if he does not, he is no more a free man than a dog. So, lowering the drinking age would give people the freedom to harm themselves. College presidents agree that changing the drinking age would help. John McCardell argued that this would help end binge drinking in colleges because they wouldn't want to go to small places to drink. McCardell argued that the teens tried a sip of alcohol between the ages of 10 and 15. McCardell fell out in his home state with presidents of other colleges. Who agrees with him that the drinking age should be lowered, so that students will stop drinking excessively and maybe drinking in college......mid paper......teaches teenagers how to manage the things they consume. Lowering the drinking age by 21 would not be a bad thing at all. Teenagers have been drinking forever, the law hasn't stopped them, so what's going to help them? Teenagers will continue to drink regardless, whether the law is in place or not. Parents know this or hopefully know it, most adults who have teenagers want to help them so they don't hurt anyone or themselves. They can't do it with the current law because they could get into big trouble. Parents can be charged with child endangerment and have their children taken away. Knowing this, the age should be lowered so that this does not happen. Teenagers can drink at home without driving home. When they are at home, they are more comfortable. So know to worry about teen drunkenness and try driving. So ultimately lowering the age could and would help people in the long run..
