  • Essay / The Impact of Teen Unemployment and Possible Solutions

Unemployment has been a concern for Americans since the Great Depression when one in four people were unemployed. High unemployment impacts everyone, even those who are still employed. For example, if the unemployment rate is particularly high, even those who have jobs worry. Unemployment is also divided into distinct categories depending on the group being studied. Categories can be sorted by race, age or location. For example, the unemployment rate of people aged sixty to sixty-five could be compared to that of people aged thirty to thirty-five. These categories allow the economist to see which groups are better off and which groups are worse off. One group that is particularly badly off is adolescents. Some have compared this to the Great Depression due to the fact that the numbers are somewhat similar to those seen during the Great Depression, in fact.
