The KidsHealth website (2013) reports that children reluctant to discuss incidents of bullying may exhibit warning signs, such as abnormal sleeping patterns or eating habits, mood changes, sudden anxiety or possibly avoidance of certain situations. Alternatively, a child may be a bully if he or she continues to behave in an unpleasant manner while playing with certain children, or if he or she is extremely concerned about his or her status or popularity with other children (Wood, n.d.). Victims of bullying, as well as those who practice it, can suffer mental and emotional trauma throughout their adult lives. Furthermore, these behaviors not only affect those directly involved but also the students who witness them. These impacts are more immediate and classified as non-fatal and fatal. Non-fatal impacts are considered free of violence; like when children miss school to avoid being bullied or perhaps when a child becomes depressed. Fatal impacts are considered violent. Two examples of this would be when a child is beaten or when a child harms himself. Alarmingly, in 2013, approximately 2,134 children aged 10 to 19 committed suicide (Drapeau, CW and McIntosh, J. L.,
