“Why should I pay higher taxes so some lazy poor person can collect another unemployment check and go back to his couch and spend my money? » (Johnson). Does this look recognizable? Unfortunately, most of us have heard these anti-welfare views many times before. Recent census data shows that approximately 48.5 million people, or approximately 16% of the population, currently face poverty (Johnson). This is the fourth consecutive year that the poverty rate has increased. The recession has pushed huge numbers of Americans into poverty, and despite the economy recovering, wages are still delayed and people continue to struggle nationwide. For many, the only remedy is to turn to safety net programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, child care assistance, TANF, and unemployment benefits, to name a few a few. The ability to get out of poverty can be accomplished with the will to succeed, but the fact that society tries to help them too much makes them lackadaisical, so I would blame the structures of society such as economic structure and fluctuations. However, others may say that society is not an extreme idea that dominates and controls us on a daily basis. It depends on how insightfully we think or why we do what we do. The company cannot be blamed for the actions it takes. Their point of view is that it is easy to blame society for all the problems we face and in the case of poverty they can blame a lot of things on society, but we have to step up and be ourselves responsible. We may live in a free country, but that doesn't give us permission to do what we want. In some cases, unfortunately, people cannot fight for their rights, as others can, such as minority groups included... middle of paper ...... asked to help the government. It's not fair to them. The system may be corrupted. No one benefits from just giving them free materials, with no limitations or tools to use to help them improve their lives. In cases like if someone goes on welfare after losing their job and applying for food stamps, they will give you the food stamps and tell them that in order to keep the assistance they must then participate in a job search program. Social assistance helps people by providing them with food on the condition that they make an effort to look for a job, they give them a sheet and they have to apply for a job and ask employers to sign the sheet to vouch of the person applying. However, they should give them some sort of job training, whether it's helping someone get a GED, resume and interview skills or a skill to help them land a better job where you make enough money that you won't need their help ever again or anytime soon..
