Essay / Title IX: Protecting our right to an education free of sexual harassment and equal opportunity in school activities? That’s what Title IX does. Title IX was created by a woman named Edith Green. She served as legislative chair of the Oregon Parent-Teacher Congress. She became a member of the House in 1954. Her first proposal was the Library Services Bill. For eight years, she shepherded Title IX until it was passed on June 23, 1972, part of the Higher Education Act. (Crass, Scott)Title IX is a law that requires gender equality in every federally funded educational program. It is called the “living, breathing law” because it has been the subject of lawsuits, amendments and revisions. (NWLC)Women and girls have benefited from more participation opportunities and more equitable facilities. Women who were younger than ten years old when Title IX was passed have significantly higher sports participation than those who grew up earlier. Fifty-five percent of the “post-Title IX” generation participated in high school sports, compared to thirty-three percent of the “pre-Title IX” generation. Women were offered more scholarships for higher education. In fact, many female athletes competing in the Olympics credit Title IX for their success in allowing them to attend college on athletic scholarships. (Feminist Majority Foundation) Although most people only apply this to sports, it also applies to professional education, the education of pregnant and parenting students, and higher education. Most Title IX complaints involve either sexual harassment or sports.
