Essay / Media Influences on the Development of Stereotypes - 1092
It is evident that in society, media plays a major role in influencing the formation of gender stereotypes in the minds of children and adults. Effortlessly, a person can come across a television show or article targeting a specific race and ethnicity by depicting stereotypes about others. While surfing the internet, I came across an article on a blog called Elite Daily. Elite Daily is known as a sexist blog aimed at young men. The site uses gender stereotypes to put men on a pedestal. Many of their published articles are based on stereotypes such as men like sports and sex, while women like to stay at home and do housework. The article I am specifically referring to is titled "Things Every Twenty-Year-Old Should Realize" and was published in early August 2013. This specific article is identical to many Elite Daily articles that are designed to exalt men and degrade women. The article was written with the aim of making 20-year-olds aware of how they should approach life. It was unfunny, judgmental and hateful. The article was so banal and misogynistic that its approval surprised many. The article contained quotes such as "Ladies: your teeth are made for chewing, and we don't like to be chewed on........if you can put her to bed before the 3rd date , then you will. getting bored with her by week 2” (p2). The article was clearly crafted in a stereotypical manner by a man in order to influence the reader's perception. While searching for an article similar but different from this one, I came across an article titled "The Top 10 Things I (Apparently) Still Need to Remember at 30" on a blog known as name of 20 something. 20 Nothings is a women's blog designed to uplift women by giving them daily tips for ...... middle of paper ...... as it could give children false stereotypical information, which could lead to the development of a false idea about their culture and society later as adults. These effects could be reduced by passing strict laws that prevent the publication of hateful articles, or at least a law that requires blog and magazine editors to carefully approve only information that is accurate and appropriate for the general public.
