  • Essay / Green Mile - 1125

The Green Mile has a huge connection to the seven Catholic social teachings. The first, human life and dignity, is very evident in the Green Line. The main connection to this one is how Tom Hank's character cares about John Coffey. Many people would not care or even give a second glance to someone who is in prison and on death row, but Paul, the guard, comes close. He ends up really caring about John Coffey and believes he is innocent. This shows life and human dignity, because when he has to perform it, he believes he will go to hell and cannot live with what he has done. The film generally evokes the debate on capital punishment. To truly respect human life, we cannot be in favor of the death penalty. This film shows how terribly cruel it can be to everyone involved. The Green Mile ties into the call to family when John Coffey helps everyone. He has nothing to do and he knows nothing will let him out, but he always does what it takes to help the people around him. He helps Paul and then the director's sick and dying wife. This film gives a message about how we should act towards others around us. Paul truly understood his rights as an integral part of God's creation. He knew all of her gifts and respected them. He knew he had a responsibility to try to let people know that he believed John was innocent. It also shows the contrast between how Percy acts and how he is the opposite of what we Catholics are supposed to be. The Green Line truly represents the poor and vulnerable with all the people in prison. Paul does everything he can for John, who has less than everyone else and, on death row, in a very vulnerable state. John Coffey also shows this when he helps vulnerable people like Paul, the dead mouse... middle of paper... and standing up for your beliefs. However, this can be very difficult in today's society. There are many people who judge you and will try to disrespect you if you stand up for your beliefs. Today, people tend to move away from religion, especially in politics, where it can have a huge influence on the world. Some people are afraid to stand out for their faith and therefore blend in with the crowd. That is not being a Christian leader. To be a leader, you must stand out and stand up for your faith to make a difference. It takes courage to be a leader. It's going to be difficult, but that's part of growing up. I believe I have already begun to become a Christian leader and am on my way to becoming a good leader. Once I accomplish this, I really want to make a difference in the world because there are a lot of things that need to change..
