The racist comments that were made came from former Hawks owner Bruce Levenson and Hawks general manager Danny Ferry; Both white men. Both Levenson and Ferry have been involved in two racial controversies. Former Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson sent an email to the other Hawks CEOs stating that the crowd and entertainment (team, cheerleaders, halftime talent, the music selection, etc.) are all black. Levenson continued to say in his email that because the audience and entertainment were predominantly black, it scared conscious white fans and investors from coming to the games (Joesph, 2014, USA Today. On the other hand, the Hawks general manager Danny Ferry was recorded on a conference call making slanderous remakes about then-free agent Luol Deng who the Hawks were trying to acquire. During the call, Ferry. professes that "'[Deng] has a bit of African in him'" (ESPN.com).
