Essay / Unpromising and gloomy future for humanity
Many people have different views on the future, some would agree that societies around the world are evolving with better technology, development of countries, education and that over time we will be able to solve global problems such as poverty, climate change and many more. These people don't use facts, but use "hope" to share the idea that our future as a civilization looks bright. However, the opinions of those who oppose this idea are also present. This group of people represents the idea that the future of humanity is bleak and heading in a direction that does not seem promising to most. These people use statistics and facts that show, for example, how global warming and climate change have increased at an unprecedented rate. They show how depression rates have soared by 70% among adolescents, future generations, over the past 25 years. Say no to plagiarism. Of course, no one knows what the future holds; Looking closer and examining the facts between the idea of society and humanity moving towards a desirable or undesirable future, there is no doubt that we as a people are heading towards the undesirable side and If we want to turn things around, we better start making big changes now. Based on information about the behavior of the younger generations who will eventually become our future generation, this shows that respect and kindness towards each other is being lost. Respect, kindness and selflessness are highly admired traits in today's society, you could ask anyone and there would be a guarantee that almost everyone would agree. These traits correspond to what we call “social norms”. This term is defined by “the informal agreements that govern the behavior of members of a society”. In other words, this means that the behavior of a certain population of society is based on a mutual understanding of what is considered acceptable by the majority. This is a scary idea because as traits like kindness and respect are used less and less over time, this means that eventually these traits will be replaced by others like lack of empathy and ignorance. A study done for an article titled “Understanding Today’s Rude Teenagers” shows that a study was conducted with 14,000 students. The article states: “The study indicated that since the year 2000, students have become 40 percent less empathetic than they were 20 to 30 years ago. They no longer frequently answer “yes” to questions such as “I sometimes try to understand my friends better by putting myself in their situation” or “I often worry about people who are worse off than me.” . (Karkov, 2012). So this shows that over the last fifteen years, younger generations have already started to break down using older, more conventional traits as social norms. With this in mind, once this “new” generation grows up and raises their own children, these children will most likely adopt the same or, at the very least, similar traits as their parents/role models. Another article written for the Daily. The telegraph from a radio host named Amanda Blair further reinforces the idea that lack of respectsocieties towards each other, especially among new generations, is very widespread. An important piece of information to keep in mind when reading quotes from her article is that she was born in 1968 and therefore has experience of what life and society were like in the past and what that they are in the present, which makes her able to make comparisons between the two periods. Blair uses a quote that describes what an important moral value looked like in the past when she was growing up: "We were once a decent society, raised according to the Golden Rule, the maxim that essentially demands that we treat others as we would like to be treated. others treat ourselves.” (Blair, 2015). She then makes a comparison that can be viewed very easily today by simply going to any form of social media and clicking on a post where you can share opinions and states: "The erosion of morals saddens me . Social media provides a huge platform for sharing opinions, but I can't help but be shocked by the diminishing decorum. Calling someone a "c" because you disagree with their position on an issue is not "free speech" or "exercising your democratic right", it is is just rude. (Blair, 2015). This phenomenon occurs so frequently that there is no need for studies to prove that it occurs. Just look at a post and find two people who disagree. Most of the time you will see profanities used and the people involved trying to degrade each other because they disagree with them. This shows that while social media can be used for good, bad situations like this also happen on a daily basis. Speaking of social media, this is another point that also puts humanity in danger of creating a desolate future. The idea of social media is undoubtedly a wonderful way for people around the world to communicate with each other. Unfortunately, social media also makes people less social and also opens the door to acts such as cyberbullying. There are two videos that really help to grasp the idea of the negative impact of social media on society and make us more desensitized to serious issues which, therefore, can have detrimental effects on different members of society. The first video is titled: “Can We Auto-Correct Humanity” by Prince EA, on YouTube. This is an extremely powerful video that uses facts to teach us the shocking truth about the social media we think of as "social." The first fact really resonates the more you think about it, because it indicates that the average person spends 4 years of their life staring at a screen. The facts used show how social media connects us only through screens, but not in real life. This also shows that due to the use of social media to communicate like SnapChat, Instagram and many others, people in today's society who use social media are less likely to choose to communicate with others in life real, but prefer to do it on their devices. The second media product is yet another video on YouTube. But this time, the topic is cyberbullying. More specifically how far cyberbullying can go. On October 10, 2012, an account named Amanda Todd posted a video in which she appeared very distressed. The video continues and she talks about how she was cyberbullied without going into too much detail, but giving enough to show the viewer the struggles she went through to..
