Essay / Causes of Deteriorating British Colonial Relations
Throughout the 1700s, relations between Britain and its colonies became more strained. New generations of settlers felt more entitled to certain rights and freedoms that had been considered privileges by their ancestors. As the years passed, Britain was less and less able to keep its colonies happy. Ultimately, the colonists did not even feel integrated into their mother country, Great Britain. The deterioration of British colonial relations in the late 1700s was caused by a lack of representation and attention from Britain. The beginning of 1763 marked one of the major events that would contribute to the end of British colonial relations. On February 3, 1763, the French and Indian War finally ended in British victory, but while the British celebrated the defeat of the French, the colonists feared the repercussions the war would have on them. The main motive for the war was possession of French fur trading territory in North America. For the colonists, the war was fought by and for Britain and not by the colonies. The benefits of victory were for Britain alone. The consequence of the war for the colonies was to trample their need for expansion. During the war, Native Americans had fought alongside the French because of the way they treated them. Britain was known for its abuse of Native Americans, so once the French were defeated; they began attacking western settler colonies. To avoid confrontation, the Proclamation of 1763 was adopted by Parliament. The Proclamation set a limit on necessary colonial expansion. Specifically, the Proclamation prohibited settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains. The passage of the Proclamation of 1763 infuriated the colonists...... middle of paper ...... they needed to separate from Britain and listed Britain's infractions against the colonies. The main reason for the separation of the colonies Lack of equality in Parliament and disregard for Britain's colonial needs. Whether it was forcing someone to pay for a war they didn't fight or didn't want, limiting their need for land, or raising taxes, all of these factors came into play. a role in the dissolution of British colonial ties. The settlers were only human and had a human response of defiance to injustice. If the colonists had not had the audacity that they demonstrated, America today would be a very different place. Separating from Britain was the greatest thing the colonists could have done. ixzz1Ujnr35mb
