Essay / The privilege of Shamus Rahman Khan: the creation of a...
Returning to his old high school after graduating ten years ago, Shamus Rahman Khan arrived with one goal: to study inequalities from a school that claims to be more “diverse”. St. Paul's School located in Concord, New Hampshire, claims to have diversified over the years, accepting people of different racial backgrounds and social classes into its prestigious boarding school. However, as described in his book, Khan found this claim by the school to be false. He also discovered that the elite who attended his school are not the same as those who attend today. Nevertheless, it was the elite who succeeded because they were the ones who could afford school, had family lines that already attended school, and mastered the "ease" that made them privileged in society. Separating his book into five different chapters, each focusing on a different topic that helps support his claims, Khan describes this elite shift and the inequality that still accompanies St. Paul. In the introduction to Privilege: The Making of an Adolescent Elite at St. Paul's School, Khan makes the three most important points that he will refer to throughout the rest of the book: hierarchies are natural and can be used to our advantage, experiences count more. only inherited qualities, and elites signal their status through ease and openness. These are discussed in detail throughout Privilege. The New Elite, or Chapter 1, is where Khan introduces the idea of the new elite appearing at St. Paul's. The new elite, according to Khan, believe that they achieve what they do through hard work. On the other hand, the old elite, which is gradually disappearing, believes that they succeed thanks to their family...... middle of paper ...... h At school ten years later, Shamus Rahman Khan discovers that the school which claims to have become more diverse still presents a lot of inequalities. The way to succeed in this school is to master the art of being comfortable with different things, from student behavior to building relationships between different classes and cultures. If this does not happen, then students are not privileged and will not succeed or go to a good university. The illusion of equality is torn into fragments due to Khan's different reasoning for why only the elite succeed. Works Cited Khan, Shamus Rahman. 2011.
