The 1980s were one of the most interesting decades experienced in the United States. Managing the stock market, the emergence of new inventions, down to the types of music people listened to. In the 1980s, the only thing that made Americans “American” was the things they were provided with. Many Americans entertained themselves throughout the 1980s with materialistic, glamorous, and technological lifestyles; Americans therefore faced different economic problems. During the 1980s, many Americans were incredibly materialistic; they were only interested in the “things” of life, not in life as it was. In the music world, Madonna was becoming popular. One of her biggest hits, Material Girl, explains it all. Many women focused solely on themselves and relied on men to support their extravagant lifestyles (QUOTE, #). The type of men women typically sought out were young, urban professionals, known as yuppies. The reason women flocked to these men was because they loved the extravagant gifts they received, and it seemed that - everyone wanted a "yuppie" - that was the new cool thing.
