  • Essay / America in the 1980s - 994

The 1980s were one of the most interesting decades experienced in the United States. Managing the stock market, the emergence of new inventions, down to the types of music people listened to. In the 1980s, the only thing that made Americans “American” was the things they were provided with. Many Americans entertained themselves throughout the 1980s with materialistic, glamorous, and technological lifestyles; Americans therefore faced different economic problems. During the 1980s, many Americans were incredibly materialistic; they were only interested in the “things” of life, not in life as it was. In the music world, Madonna was becoming popular. One of her biggest hits, Material Girl, explains it all. Many women focused solely on themselves and relied on men to support their extravagant lifestyles (QUOTE, #). The type of men women typically sought out were young, urban professionals, known as yuppies. These men were able to support themselves financially and were upper middle class in their 20s and 30s (QUOTE, #). As men were financially secure, they could afford the nicer things in life like a house, a car, and vacations. The reason women flocked to these men was because they loved the extravagant gifts they received, and it seemed that - everyone wanted a "yuppie" - that was the new cool thing. In everyday life, people in the 80s still looked unique. One solution was to use a powerful bandage. Men and women have always had the best of the best; from tailored suits to shoulder pads, to pinstripe suits (QUOTE, #). One of the main goals in the 80's was for people to just focus on materials, or middle of paper......trying to rebuild the economy, they took the job seriously. The digital organizer is an invention that has helped them immensely. At any time of the day, people could take this small electronic device out of their pocket and check their schedules. This helped them stay on track with the things they needed to do, like making appointments and being on time. The digital organizer simply helped people stay on track every day. (QUOTE, # ). New technological ideas have really helped the United States not be so far behind the rest of the world. Throughout the 1980s, which was one of the most interesting decades ever, Americans focused only on the things that life had to offer...and not on life as it was. it was. The materialistic, glamorous and technological aspects have obviously been big contributors, the economy has also seen some decline..
