Essay / Concussion Research Paper - 978
The majority of adolescents who sustain a concussion are due to sports. A concussion is a pathophysiological process that affects the brain, usually caused by traumatic brain injury. Concussions are mainly caused by impacts, falls that cause the head to move back and forth quickly, or a jolt. The brain is a 3-pound organ floating inside the skull. It is surrounded by spinal fluid which causes shock when hit. When the brain begins to move rapidly inside the skull, a concussion has occurred. A common cause is a direct blow to the head. The force causes the brain to hit the inside of the skull. When the brain starts to slow down, it hits the other side of the inside of the skull. The other common scenario is a rotational concussion. This happens when the brain turns from side to side. As a result, brain tissue is strained and sheared. In both cases, fragile neural pathways can be damaged, creating neurological disturbances. Scientists suggest that if an athlete has suffered a concussion before, they are 1 to 2 times more likely to suffer a second one; 2-4 to have a third; and 3-9 to have a fourth. Surprisingly, research has shown that women are more likely to sustain a concussion and experience more symptoms than men. Additionally, women take longer to recover than men. Concussions have short- and long-term consequences, even death in some cases. Most people who experience a concussion recover quickly and completely. However, in some people, symptoms can last for days, weeks, or longer. Overall, recovery depends on a person's age, health before the accident, and the quality of care they receive after the injury. People who have suffered a concussion should be seen by a doctor to be examined by a CT scan or otherwise. Test such...... middle of paper ...... decade. Half of these reports were related to sport, 40% concerned adolescents aged 8 to 13. Football and hockey were the top two team sports with the most concussion injuries. Other sports such as snow skiing and cycling had the highest number of reports for a non-team sport. Concussions can happen to anyone, so it's important to know how to prevent them and how to treat them. I recently suffered a concussion. The headaches and dizziness were harsh, it took days for the dizziness to go away. I still have headaches, luckily they are mild. Unfortunately, I don't remember anything that happened the day I was hit. This is probably the worst. I'm not fully recovered, but the doctor told me I can start playing basketball again. However, I have to take it slow. I wouldn't want anyone to get a concussion. In other words, if you use your head, you can protect it.
