Essay / Purity culture and sexual shame - 1807
The scene is the same in Christian youth groups, whatever the denominations. The youth leader brandishes the object of purity: a demutilated rose, a paper clip with elegant and manufactured curves. Cue the entrance of sexual sin and shame – greedy fingers disfiguring the frail flower, a violent grip bending the paper clip beyond repair. The leader explains that sexual sin is the one thing that harms you irreversibly, that makes you “damaged goods,” that could ruin your relationships and your spiritual journey for the rest of your life. Christianity has a major influence on American culture when it comes to youth sexuality. The methods of educating young people in mainline Protestant denominations about their spiritual obligations regarding sexuality are flawed and steeped in weak theology, leading to risky sexual behavior and the fetishization of purity. Many of the illustrations depicted in Christian youth programs to demonstrate the value of purity depict having sex as a form of ruin. One in particular “indirectly compares [teenagers who have had sex] to a glass of water that all the kids in the room have spit into” (McFarlan-Miller). This develops a culture where a person's entire worth depends on preserving their virginity. Live Different is a series of lessons published for youth groups. This youth program teaches young people to have sex only in the “right place” and at the “right time.” He answers his own questions by saying that the right place and time is within the confines of marriage and when you are older. One of the main scriptural points of the lesson is taken from the Song of Solomon which expresses that the heart should not “stir up love.” until he desires" and argues that "this verse indicates that there is an auspicious time for "love" to be aw...... middle of paper......
