    Andy, a banker imprisoned for life for the murder of his wife and her lover. Andy asks Red for a rock hammer because he says he likes rocks and needs to find a way to stay busy here. The principal tells Andy that if Andy becomes the new librarian, he will make sure that the sister gang doesn't get around him. So Andy starts work and ends up becoming a teacher of sorts. Andy helps inmates earn a high school diploma by teaching them subjects and giving them the ACT test. Then one day this guy named Tommy came to the prison, and Andy and the guys find out that Andy is innocent because Tommy knows the guy who killed Andy's wife and lover. So Andy is going to talk to the director about it to maybe be released. The director had different plans. The director puts Andy in solitary confinement for two months. During the two months, Andy didn't break down at all. Then, when he finally comes out of solitary, he tells Red that even though he didn't actually murder his wife, he led her to a new lover who had her murdered. Red tells Andy, "You're not a murderer, maybe a bad husband, but not a murderer." ยป After talking to Andy, Red senses that Andy is up to something so he goes to talk to the guys. One guy admits that Andy asked him for a six-foot rope and he gave it to them. Next, to check out the bed, Andy checks in, and then he puts his master plan into action. Andy used the hammer to dig a huge hole in the wall leading to the sewer system. Andy crawled and made his way to a river where he took a shower. In the morning, when the principal found out that he had escaped, the only thing they could find was his clothes. Andy, using the prison documents he stole, goes to the reporters and tells them about Shawshank Prison. The next day, at the prison, the police show up to look for the director and he commits suicide. Andy never gave up hope of getting out. Andy finally gets redemption for a crime he was innocent of
