  • Essay / Summary and thoughts on The Boy Who Bleed by Evan Hunter

“The Boy Who Bleed” is a short story by author Evan Hunter. The story contains extensive exposition that clearly states the setting, main protagonist, main antagonist, and plot. The setting takes place in a dark alley, back when gangs like the Royals existed in the city. In the exposition, it is stated that the main protagonist, Andy, bleeds to death. The exhibit also states that Andy was taken by the rival gang: the Guardians and stabbed in an alley. This foreshadows the ending of the short story and also creates a mood of apathy and sparse drama to accompany the story. The inciting incident in "The Boy Who Bleed" occurs when Andy is stabbed. The main protagonist Andy is a member of the Royals gang. By being part of this gang, they compete with the Guardians. As Andy left the jump to get a pack of cigarettes just a block away, members of the Guardians decided to stab him just below the rib cage, pulling the knife down to create a large tear in his abdomen . Andy is then left in the alley, bleeding to death but does not realize he is dying. He only hopes that he will be found and brought to help. Then, in the rising action, Andy meets four people who had the opportunity to help him, but didn't. The climax of "The Boy Who Bled" occurs just after Laura leaves him to go find a cop. What happens next is symbolic. Andy realizes he is dying and after having recurring thoughts about being a Royal. With his remaining strength, he removes his jacket a foot from his body before passing away. As Laura returns with a cop, the cop is ready to investigate her death, until he sees her Royals jacket a foot away. The cop now only considers Andy as a Royal, without much difficulty middle of paper. He struggles to come to terms with the fact that he is dying and who exactly Andy is. Andy has recurring thoughts about how important he is to the gang and how important the gang is to him. Thus, creating Andy a dynamic character. Through the resolution, Andy finally identifies with himself and realizes that he prefers to be known as Andy rather than Royal. By removing his jacket, it symbolically represents that Andy would like to be known as an individual and not as a Royal. I rate “The Boy Who Bled” 5 out of 5 Royals. I gave this story this perfect rating because I thought it was easy to relate to and understand due to my age. This story is about identity and regret, as Andy didn't get the chance to be himself, as he gave up his identity for another at such a young age. I can relate to this which is what makes me read the story so easily because of the emotions it gives me..
