  • Essay / The five main components of language - 1069

The three components of language include content, form and use. These components are then made up of the five main components of language which are semantics, morphology, phonology, syntax and pragmatics (Owens, 2012, p. 18). Each of these main components provides its own sets of rules. Semantic rules give meaning to words or content to a combination of words (Owens, 2012, p. 23). The smallest units of words are called morphemes. Morphemes can be both free and bound depending on whether the word can stand alone or not. Morphemes can also be derived morphemes if they include a prefix or suffix (Owens, 2012, p. 21). Phonology concerns the sounds made by letters in a certain sequential order. Syntactic rules involve the structure of words and sentences. Finally, pragmatics concerns the way we use language to communicate. When these rules are not followed, communication with others will not be possible.
